Traveler checking Korean electronic travel authorization before departure

Do You Need K-ETA to Visit Korea in 2026?

Before boarding a flight to South Korea, check whether you need a visa, a K-ETA, or neither. The answer depends on the passport you will use, your travel purpose, and the rules in effect on your travel date. A rule that applies to a friend with a different nationality may not apply to you.

What is K-ETA?

K-ETA is an electronic travel authorization for eligible visa-free travelers. It is not a visa, and approval does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers make the final admission decision at the port of entry.

Temporary exemption through December 31, 2026

The Ministry of Justice extended the existing temporary K-ETA exemption from January 1 through December 31, 2026. The extension applies only to the countries and regions covered by the official exemption measure; it does not make every traveler exempt.

Use the official K-ETA website to check the nationality shown on the passport you will actually travel with. If you hold more than one passport, do not assume the result for one passport applies to the other.

Why might an exempt traveler still apply?

An exempt traveler may still submit a paid K-ETA application voluntarily. The official notice explains that approved K-ETA holders can receive related entry-processing benefits, including exemption from submitting an arrival card. Because procedures can change, check the current arrival-card instructions shortly before departure.

How to apply safely

  1. Start at the official website whose domain ends in k-eta.go.kr, or use the official mobile app.
  2. Enter your name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, and passport expiry date exactly as printed.
  3. Prepare a recent facial photo, your intended address in Korea, and local contact information.
  4. Apply with time to spare. The official guide says assessment normally takes 72 hours or less, but it can take longer.
  5. Check the result through the official system and update required travel information before a later trip.

The application fee is non-refundable even when an application is denied. Be cautious of websites that resemble the official service but add large agency fees.

Before you travel

  • Make sure the passport used for the application is the passport you will present for travel.
  • Recheck airline and Korean immigration requirements immediately before departure.
  • Do not confuse K-ETA validity with the period of stay granted at entry.
  • If your passport information changes, follow the official instructions rather than editing the old details informally.

Long-term study or work is different

K-ETA is intended for eligible visa-free visits and is not a substitute for a student, employment, or residence visa. Travelers planning paid work, degree study, or a long stay should confirm the correct visa before departure and check whether residence-card registration is required after arrival.
