Many services in Korea work best through local mobile apps. For a first trip, install only the tools that solve essential problems: routes, trains, taxis, translation, official travel information, and emergency support.
| Need | Start with | Before arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Maps & transit | NAVER Map | Save your hotel and first destinations in Korean |
| Intercity trains | KorailTalk | Check whether your route uses KTX or another rail operator |
| Taxis | Kakao T or k.ride | Confirm whether your planned app works without a Korean phone number |
| Translation | Papago / Google Translate | Download offline language data where available |
Practical setup: Install the apps before flying, open each one once, save your accommodation address and keep a screenshot of the Korean address. Do not wait until you are standing outside the airport with low battery or limited data.
1. NAVER Map
Use it to search Korean addresses, public transport routes, restaurants, shops, and attractions. Save both the English and Korean spelling of important destinations.
2. KorailTalk
KorailTalk supports train searches and booking. According to the Korea Tourism Organization’s 2026 guide, it offers several languages including English, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Thai.
3. Kakao T or k.ride
Kakao T is widely used for taxis, while k.ride is designed for international travelers and supports overseas card registration and multilingual features. Available services and payment methods can change, so check the current app information before relying on one option.
4. VISITKOREA
The official Korea Tourism Organization service provides attractions, festivals, travel tips, and itinerary tools in multiple languages.
5. A translation tool
Keep a translation app ready for menus, signs, transport notices, and conversations. Camera translation is especially useful, but check names, prices, allergy information, and legal terms against the original.
6. 1330 Travel Helpline
The official 1330 service provides travel information, interpretation, and tourist complaint support. Save the web service and telephone information rather than depending on memory.
Before installing any travel app
- Check whether it works with an overseas phone number.
- Check whether it accepts your payment card.
- Download offline information when possible.
- Limit access to location, photos, contacts, and notifications to what you actually need.
- Do not upload your passport to an unofficial service.
